The land that Freedom Run Winery sits upon, the Niagara Escarpment, is steeped in history. It is said that in the 1800s enslaved African-American families from the southern United States ran from the South aided by the Underground Railroad, and along the Escarpment, under cover of night, to reach the Niagara River, and once across, to freedom in Canada. Hence, our name ~ Freedom Run Winery.

French History at the Escarpment: During World War II, clever French vintners scoured the rest of the globe for a comparable place to temporarily bring their rootstock to safety. Legend has it that they found the Niagara escarpment and this special AVA area to be the most comparable to their French climate and soil.
