Mr. Seymour was well known for his philanthropy, having founded the Seymour Library and the Auburn City Hospital. In 1861, at the age of 70, Mr. Seymour built the house that still stands at 113 North Street. This house was later owned by Charles A McCarthy, founder of Dunn and McCarthy Shoes. The Seymour monument is located on the Cemetery's Evening Side section of Fort Hill Cemetery.

James Seymour was also known in the community for his close friendship with William Seward who resided in Auburn and served as the Governor of New York and United States Secretary of State under President Abraham Lincoln.

The mansion's architect was John W. Venderbosch, who also worked on Holy Family and St. Mary's churches, among other historic Auburn buildings.

A few highlights of the mansion include its Gothic Revival tower with castle-like parapet and Gothic windows; Italianate rounded arch windows; walnut paneled foyer; built-in, solid walnut secretary; octagonal turret room; rounded exterior porch and beautiful brick carriage house.
