The Fairfield Estate has historic importance for the following reasons. Its history includes:

  • Gustav Stickley built only two residential libraries in his lifetime and this remarkable house has one of them.

  • Andrew Dickson White, co-founder and First President of Cornell University visited here often, as his nephew prominent lawyer Andrew S. White owned the Fairfield Estate. At one point in time, the house was left to Cornell University.

  • Andrew S. White’s wife, notable concert singer, Clare Alcee performed at the White House for President Franklin Roosevelt and Eleanor and used the Fairfield Estate as her creative muse.

  • Also, Theodore Roosevelt dined there.

"From the collection of Andrew S. White [18]88, nephew of President Andrew D. White of Cornell University." On the south wall of the main corridor of Stimson Hall.
In 1912 Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, Andrew S. White and others opposed to the Republican party's presidential candidate, William Howard Taft, met at Andrew S. White's home in Fayetteville, New York (near Syracuse).

They formed a third party which they named "The Progressive Party" and chose Roosevelt as their candidate. There was a stuffed moose head on the wall of the room. This they chose as their emblem. Naturally the Progressives were dubbed "Bull Moosers". Unfortunately, their action split the Republican party and the Democrats elected Woodrow Wilson. The moose head came to Cornell as part of the Andrew S. White estate. It was stolen in the 1980's.
