The backdrop to this winery is the Niagara Escarpment which fugitive slaves ran across under cover of night to reach the Niagara River and once across to Freedom in Canada.

History of the Land the Winery Sits Upon:

The land that Freedom Run Winery sits upon, the Niagara Escarpment, is steeped in history involving the Underground Railroad freedom seekers that traveled through the Niagara escarpment.

It is said that, in the 1800’s, enslaved African-American families from the southern United States ran from the South aided by the Underground Railroad, and along the Escarpment, under cover of night, to reach the Niagara River, and once across, to freedom in Canada. Hence, the name ~ Freedom Run Winery.

The winery's name “Freedom Run” comes from the history of its land as part of Harriet Tubman’s road to freedom that safely escorted and escaped enslaved people to freedom in Canada.

American Viticultural Area (AVA):

French History at the Escarpment: During World War II, clever French vintners scoured the rest of the globe for a comparable place to temporarily bring their rootstock to safety. Legend has it that they found the Niagara escarpment and this special American Viticultural Area (AVA) to be the most comparable to their French climate and soil.
